Canada’s auto theft problem has taken a disturbing turn with reports of thieves using Apple AirTags to track vehicles. The Insurance Bureau of Canada reports over 105,000 vehicles stolen in 2022 alone, and criminals seem to be adopting new tactics.
One victim, Ethan Yang, received an alert on his phone while driving home from Montreal that an AirTag was tracking his car. He located the device hidden in the front grill. Similar reports have surfaced in Vermont, raising concerns about a wider trend.
Experts believe these AirTags might be used to identify and target specific vehicles for theft and potential overseas shipment. While Yang’s AirTag didn’t help recover his stolen car, another Toronto man tracked his stolen vehicle to Dubai using the same technology.
This raises safety concerns, but it’s important to remember that Apple and law enforcement advise against confronting thieves directly. If you find an unknown AirTag or have your car stolen, report it to the police immediately.
